My opinion.
He's a 30 yr old rookie essentially. Has not been given the keys to the car yet. If any team offers him big $$$$ to play QB...do it. That has been his goal all along, that has been what he's aspired to do. Realize that goal and see what you can do.
BECAUSE....those wanting him to stay in the "Swiss Army Knife" position....it is doomed. Up until now...it has been unreal at how successful he has been. AND, it's unreal to expect him to KEEP being that successful. There are many fans that just flip out, if he doesn't make the first down, and/or misses a pass, or fails on the fake punt.
Can you imagine when he started (more than not) running the ball and getting stuffed; RPO and pulls the ball and gets stuffed; Pass and the WR drops it, or he misses the throw or heaven forbid, gets it intercepted, or he started getting the drops as a WR.
The fans would turn on him SO fast! They would boo him, get after Payton for playing him, etc. The Swiss Army Knife is a short lived position. If he's not successful EVERY play (at least that it's not his fault it didn't succeed) then they will dial that type of play back, dial it back, until he is rarely playing.
As a starting QB somewhere, he can make a mistake and live to play another down. When he gets most of the reps, his accuracy will go way up, his ability to scramble and pick up the 1st down on 3rd downs will drive defenses crazy, he will learn to not truck people anymore because they need him behind center, and we'll have a lot of fun watching him shred teams with his legs and arms.
I think he's got one chance to be a starting QB in his career. If he waits 1-2 years for Brees to retire...I think they lose Bridgewater this year, and draft a rookie out of college to back up Brees. If Brees retires in 2 years, then THill will be going on 33 and I think they elevate the rookie up over THill and keep him as a tight end and his QB days are over.
My thoughts. Get the biggest, longest term contract right now, and set yourself up for life and fulfilling your dream.
