You left Weber State, Utah State, and the U off your list of
schools taking up the slack. They all contribute to filling that demand. But, location is everything and UVU FTW. In my extended family, when nephews and nieces could not or did not get into BYU, parents usually steered them to BYU-I for the name and the environment. One got kicked out of BYU-I and out of Rexburg and ended up at Utah. More than one has been sent to UVU or to Beauty School just to get them in the Provo environment.

The state schools in Utah have strong institute programs and a number of kids get steered to all of them.

And, some kids cannot afford to live away from home for school and live with parents and commute. In CA, many take the very economical JC route and then transfer to BYU later.

Nobody should be shamed for missing the academic cut at BYU. My wife proudly calls it BYU-Provo to make sure people know that our two sons got in the good BYU. Of course, we had 3 kids go elsewhere, and we love them, too.

Academic advisors at the private school in Hawaii that my two sons attended tried very hard to steer them away from BYU. They seemed to assume that academically, it was like BYU-H. There is a huge difference.
