Trusting him from prior ones he'd produced. They should have had contract terms that stated the standards of what movies they would support. It should have been vetted before being released. I'm sure there was some fallout and it soured their relationship with him.
It seems he was getting pretty arrogant, and felt the Church and Deseret were cramping his "developing his craft and developing deeper and more complex characters". Consequently, he lashed back and then seemed to go way overboard in pushing boundaries and embracing too much dark storylines to be more creative and get industry kudos. The result seems he'd unwittingly banished himself into a no man's land between the two extremes.
