I sort of liked Dutcher initially
I didn't love his movie about missionaries that put him on the map, but in many ways, I thought it was rather honest while managing to be entertaining. I liked it. Ditto for Brigham City--some holes, but I thought it was a decent show. I thought he protested a bit much against the other Mormon movies being made (not that they weren't almost entirely awful--they were. But I found him self-important in his complaints). On the whole, I liked or was at least interested in his efforts.

I don't recall everything he was up to in the interim (never saw anything else he may have done except for a cameo in one of the worst scenes of Singles Ward), but I recall the holy grail attempt with the Joseph Smith movie. I believe I recall something here on Cougarboard about his funding being pulled. Dutcher gave me the impression of a dude who'd had his ticket to (relative) fame, or at least notoriety, revoked and fell into yewt hurt mode. I read an article he did with a Christian publication. He fed them lines about Mormons that he'd have known very well that they were looking for in order to confirm what's wrong with the religion and its members. Again, he gave me the impression of a calculating dude, a chameleon of sorts who assumed religious stances supporting his professional ambitions of the moment--not the first to ever do this by any stretch. However, he publicly trashed his former religion for his benefit. That puts him in a much smaller, less-desirable group.

Not surprised to hear that Dutcher has faded, if that is indeed what happened.
