I think I recall that he was kind of down a slanted chute. The rescuers had something attached to him to try to pull him out, but that either broke or got disconnected and he slid down further. At that point, there was no way to get something else connected to him, I'm guessing because his arms were pinned and not able to help. Pretty awful way to go, and pretty rough even for the rescuers to be that close, but that helpless.
