You missed the part about him being married.
Being married means there was no additional social benefit to being at BYU. If you're married, figure you've got a decent job waiting nd therefore don't need to finish school, plus you can go back to where you and your wife served, maybe you just do it. That's why he leaves 2 years early--staying in college is just delaying what he's going to do anyway. For single kids there's more reason to stay.
