It was an old Havahart trap. The collapsing doors were solid, not wire grid, like so many live traps are today. Anyhow, I could walk up to either end of the trap without being seen. I picked up the trap and the skunk never sprayed (and it would have at least seen my legs through the floor of the trap as I walked with it. One skunk I just let out and it ran away. Another time I lowered the trap (with skunk inside) into a creek to drown it. After a couple of minutes I lifted the trap out of the water and dumped the skunk out onto a lawn. I could see it was still breathing slightly. It slowly revived, and after about a half-hour it trotted away. I figured that after the ordeal it went through it deserved to live. Anyway, if the entrance to your trap is greater than about a foot, I'd be nervous. Don't just wait a couple of days for it to dehydrate and die, though.
