The Spectrum has been living off reputation for a few years now
It'll still be a good environment, but not like 10-15 years ago when I was a student. As for aggression towards you or your son I wouldn't worry about it. I never saw that and there were plenty of heated games in my time. The chants and yelling are reserved for the game and the players.

As an example, my father and brother (both big BYU fans) came with me to the Spectrum when Araujo was at the Y. And yes they were wearing their BYU apparel. It was a tale of 2 halves. USU was up by about 25 at half, and BYU stormed back in the 2nd to tie it up. Spencer Nelson hit the game winning shot. Anyway, we were sitting about 7 rows up on the east side under the basket which is a pretty rowdy USU section. Let it be known that my brother is very vocal and has no problem letting people know it. However, he didn't take shots at USU, just cheered very loudly for BYU. At no point did he or my dad feel threatened or bothered in the least. There were some entertaining back-and-forth jabs, but nothing to get worked up over. And when we left we didn't have any problems either.

It's the best basketball environment I've ever been in. As I said, it's not quite what it was, but it's still a great atmosphere and I wouldn't hesitate to take your son. Only problem is when he sees the Spectrum crowd he might just see the light and want to go to USU.

Enjoy!
