We had only been dating for about a month and it was her first BYU football game. I spent about an hour and a half explaining the rules of the game to her the night before. I told her that if she still liked me after witnessing my behavior at a football game, I would know she is a keeper.
We arrived a few hours early and watched the players walk into the stadium and then went to the MC parking lot to tailgate with some friends.
We noticed the clouds rolling in but we didn't expect the storm to roll in so quickly. Almost out of nowhere, the wind started blowing like crazy. We helped people pack up their tailgating equipment and then started making our way down to the stadium. But we were too late. We got caught in the rain and had to stand in the ticket line with the rain dumping on us. We were completely soaked from head to toe. I told her later it was her football baptism.
We finally made it into the stadium and waited a couple of hours for the weather delay to end. She laughed hysterically when I took my shoes off and wrang the water out of my soaking wet socks.
The game finally started and we were both a little cold from the breeze that was still blowing. We got over it pretty quickly though as BYU came out and moved the ball pretty well on their opening drive. We had to settle for a field goal, but we still had plenty to cheer for as the defense was playing pretty well too.
As the game went on we were going crazy as we witnessed Taysom run over, through, and around the Texas defense. We were jumping up and down and cheering hysterically. She told me a few months later that seeing me so passionate about something was very attractive to her and it's what made her realize she was in love with me.
Some of you might think this story is weird, but last year's victory will always be very special to me. I'm fortunate the game went the way it did because if the outcome had been reversed, my life could have turned out very differently. She learned at the next game against Utah, I'm not very fun to be around when the team doesn't play well. If I would have acted that way at the Texas game she may have decided I'm not worth keeping around. Who knows.
Here's to hoping that the team's performance tomorrow is equally dominant and leads to another special victory.
