Like others have said, high performance engines
usually have more aggressive static compression ratios as well as more aggressive ignition timing(more aggressive dynamic compression ratio). In order to resist pre-ignition (type of knock) of the fuel (very bad), you need a higher octane rated fuel. Higher octane pretty much means more knock resistant. Sorry for all the parantheses, but it's kind of hard to explain it all if you don't understand those terms.
