There are two tasks to be done when ripping a DVD. First, you need to decrypt the DVD. Then, you generally want to re-encode it into a movie file (such as an MP4 file), as this will save a significant amount of space on your hard drive.

DVDFab's free version will do the first, with better results than I've gotten from other products. I use Handbrake to do the second task.
