I've seen some pretty amazing things happen with EMDR, for sure.
It isn't for everyone - frankly, no therapeutic modality is for everyone, so that isn't surprising. But I have seen some people make some serious jumps in dealing with trauma based on EMDR.

For someone who isn't interested in meeting with a therapist - a secondary option might be to look into some of the apps out there that do bilateral stimulation. There are several - some free and some paid - that can do an OK job of giving some of the benefit of full EMDR. I think the Calm app has some bilateral stimulation settings. There's another I can't remember now that will allow you to play your regular music alternating left and right.

I also have seen this app - I haven't looked into it to say I strongly recommend it, but it's worth looking at:
