No one else in my family fished so I was completely on my own. Without Internet it was tricky so I checked out books and VHS tapes from the library.
I was able to figure it out and have been fly fishing for over 36 years now. The one thing I wish I had done when I was younger would have been finding someone to teach me proper casting form. It's not a huge deal when nymphing Utah streams but if you want to expand your horizons down the road casting is key.
It was much later in life that I had a friend who was a certified instructor take me to a park and teach me better casting form as well as how to double haul. I had so much bad muscle memory that it was definitely something I wish I would have addressed sooner.
I guess my long winded point is casting is an important skillset that I would leverage expertise as well.
