I wish I knew if this were true. Three areas of doubt:
1. My love for / willingness to spend on BYU bball has not seen lasting change based on players. Sure, I paid more attention and went to more games during Jimmer's season, but without Jimmer, BYU's ability to make money from me today would remain unchanged.

2. No other team has won much love or revenue from me based on results. I was impressed by some Alabama games in last year's tournament. I had never thought of them as a basketball school. This isn't worth nothing, but I don't see how they monetize this from me. I will still probably only watch 0 Alabama MBB games per year outside of the tournament.

3. My local G-League team that plays in my town (Texas Legends) could probably never get me to pay attention to them under any circumstances. Whether they are the best or the worst in the G League, I will still go to a handful of games when I get free tickets at a parade or whatever. I mean, I love those guys, but there is no path to fandom.

I want to believe in building a program, but college bball is a product that revolves around tradition, nostalgia, shared rituals and remembering our lost youth. You have to win a bit so we still watch, but I don't see how that turns into something permanent. Maybe it is more a thing for non-alumni fans.
