To be safe a team needs to be in the top 10 maybe 11 in rankings for an at large spot.

The reason is that the top 5 conference champions get an auto bit. Then the next 7 get at large bids. If a conference champion is outside of that top 12, then that means you need to be top 11 for an at large bid. If 2 conference champions are outside the top 12, then you need to be top 10 for the at large.
