Some fans continue to claim that we got lucky because SMU kept screwing up and beat themselves, but BYU’s defense played huge part in making them screw up. Hill had Stone’s number from the very first play, and forced SMU to go with only Jennings. By going with Jennings, it looked like Hill was able to either go 4 3, or drop the DE into coverage or as a spy, with what I believe was a 3-5-3 D. The blitzes were coming from all over the place, similar to what Bronco looked to do, and it reminded me a lot of 2012 and 2013, with the athleticism at all positions, and D line dominating up front.
They knew Jennings’s didn’t have the arm or decision making, to pick them apart, and was likely to hand off or tuck and run. The pressure they put on both QBs was so fun to watch, as they really took away the pass game and exposed the real reason why SMU had been using the 2 QB system.
