in a 16 team conference, winning the conference and getting the auto bid becomes
less likely. So trying to get an at-large bid is just about the RPI, and RPI doesn't distinguish between non-conference and conference matches. So non-conference matchups absolutely do not mean less in the long run as far as it relates to NCAA qualification. Of course any regular season matchup means less than the NCAA tournament.

Stowell was a backup last season, and she is the one who got the big chance against GT. Coach benched Mortensen for Stowell early in the 3rd set when GT had a lot of momentum. Stowell hit .333 which was second on the team besides Little. It helped for the 3rd set, but it didn't help for the 4th set. So then they went back Mortensen and subbed her for Stowell at the start of the 5th set. BYU had the lead early in the 5th but GT came back and took it.

Lee isn't being rested. BK and Strong have just beaten her out, although they hit poorly in the match. Strong particularly choked in the 5th set with serve into net and hitting out of bounds. Too bad that the 5th year graduate student wilted under the pressure for this match. BK and Strong did have a good blocking presence in the match, and BYU outblocked GT 11 to 6.

Prior is hitting .243 on the season, so just has been outplayed by Mortensen up to this match. Although Mortensen didn't play well against GT hitting just .080. Mortensen before this match had really shined. Even with poor GT match her overall hitting on the season is .346 which is second on the team for the outside hitters.
