Practice Squad Tracker for BYU (and Utah, USU, SUU, Weber St, Utah Tech) players cut from 53 man rosters
Tracking the status of BYU (and other in-state teams) cuts and who has found a practice squad home.
Players are only listed if they were signed to a contract in preseason so no Matt Bushman, Ty'son Williams, Eddie Heckard, etc types
Those marked with asterisks will have a tougher time as the practice squad only allows 6 players with 2+ years experience
BYU
Signed to Practice Squad (1)
- Max Tooley (LB, Houston
Houston): Signed as a UDFA, but had a big preseason and barely missed the cut. He was the first signed to the Texans Practice Squad
Not Yet Signed to Practice Squad (10)
- Jaren Hall (QB,
Minnesota): Hall statred preseason as Minnesota's QB4 (behind McCarthy, Darnold, Mullens) and unlikely to make them active roster. With McCarthy's injury, he got one of the last spots, but then was cut the next day. Would be shocking if he doesn't end up on a practice squad (or even active roster) somewhere. Vikings practice squad is full, but Hall could bump somoene off
- Chris Brooks (RB,
Miami): Chris Brooks looked good in preseason, but was injured in the last game and waived wiht an injury. Nobody claimed him and so far the Dolphins have filled 10/16 practice squad spots. No RB though. He spent most of last year on the Dolphins' active roster, but did have some repeated injury issues
- *Dax Milne (WR,
Las Vegas Washington): Dax has was cut first by the Commanders and then by the Raiders. The Raiders have filled 14/16 practice squad spots and no Milne so far. Commandeers are at 16/16 so far. Dax has multiple years on the Commanders' active roster and played a bit on offense as well as serving as a returner.
- Samson Nacua (WR,
New Orleans): Saints have filled 16/16 spots. Nacua is a long shot, despite a few good preseason moments. He was a late camp signing after a mediocre year in the UFL last year.
- Kedon Slovis (QB,
Indianapolis): Colts have signed 13/16 spots on their practice squad, including 1 QB in Jason Bean. Slovis is a rookie QB, but was the QB5 in Indianapolis by end of preseason
- Aidan Robbins (RB,
Cleveland): I definitely expected Robbins to make the Browns' practice squad. He had a good preseason and only have two RB on the active roster. So far they've signed 13/17 spots, but no RBs
- *Chris Wilcox (CB,
LA Chargers): Wilcox has spent each of his 3 seasons on offseason contracts or practice squads (for the Bucs, Colts, Cardinalds, Steelers and then finally the Chargers). Chargers (his most recent team) have filled 15/16 Practice Squad Spots.
- D'Angelo Mandell (CB,
Washington): Commanders have filled 16/16 spots. He spent last year mostly on the practice squad, and is now in his second year
- Kaleb Hayes (CB,
Denver NY Giants): Released by the Giants, claimed by the Broncos and then cut on cutdown day. Giants are at 15/16 spots, Broncos at 16/17
- Isaac Rex (TE,
Detroit): Signed by the Lions as a UDFA at the start of May, but cut within a few weeks. After 3 months unsigned, the Chargers brought him in for 5 days in preseason, then also cut him. His early cut and lack of interest elsewhere doesn't bode well for a practice squad spot
Utah
Signed to Practice Squad (4)
- Tim Patrick (WR, Detroit
Denver): After coming back from two season-ending injuries, he ran with the first team in the preseason, but was a surprise Broncos cut. Lions have signed him to the practice squad with the intention of getting him on the active roster.
- *Marquise Blair (S, Seattle
Seattle Philadelphia): Was a starter in 2020 before tearing his ACL that year. Had another knee injury in 2021, then spent 2022 bouncing between practice squads. Was signed by Eagles spring 2023 before being released due to injury. They then resigned him in Spring 2024...and then re-released him due to non-football injury in April 2024. Injuries have had a major impact on his career, but he's still apaprently talented enough for a practice squad spot.
- Thomas Yassmin (TE, Denver
Denver): Undrafted and signed as a UDFA. He was already drafted by a CFL team and may end up there, but is also a near-lock for the practice squad if he wants it (since teams get an international exemption there as well)...and now he it's official
- *Jackson Barton (OT, Arizona
Arizona): Spent 2022 bouncing between the Raiders' active roster and practice squad, then 2023 on the Cardinals practice squad. His best hope is to make another practice squad. He's 6'7", 300 pound, athletic, and has played NFL snaps, but is also 29 so wasn't a great practice squad fit...but was brought back by Arizona. He's not there as a developmental guy, so watch for him to get snaps if injuries hit in Arizona.
Not Yet Signed to Practice Squad (9)
- *Tyler Huntley (QB,
Cleveland): Huntley was QB4 in Cleveland and it was honestly a shock that he made the 53. Looks like they wanted to see about possibly trying to get something for him in a trade, but when that didn't materialize, he was quickly cut. He'll likely end up on a practice squad somewhere.
- Braeden Daniels (OG/OT,
Washington): A 4th rounder in 2023, Daniels missed his rookie season with a torn pec. He's young enough that he may end up on a practice squad, but there's osme concern about his ability to play tackle. Commanders have filled 16/16 practice squad spots so if he lands somewhere, it won't be there
- *Cole Fotheringham (TE,
Las Vegas): Spent 2022 and most of 2023 on Raiders' practice squad, but was active for a few weeks in each of those seasons. The Raiders added Brock Bowers and Harrison Bryant at TE, so him bieng cut was unsurprising. Now it's a tough battle for a practice squad spot as the Raiders already have 14/16 spots filled (including one TE)
- Keaton Bills (OG,
Buffalo): The Bills' practice squad is full (16/16) so no room left for Bills. He'll have to hope to land on a different practice squad, which is tough as a UDFA who didn't particularly impress in preseason
- Miles Battle (CB,
Kansas City): Signed after the first wave of UDFA, he was never in a great spot. He had a few good moments with the Chiefs, but they've already filled 16/16 practice squad spots
- *Bradlee Anae (EDGE,
Atlanta): Anae played out his initial contract with the Jets...but mostly because he was injured in 2023 and didn't count as taking a roster spot. He'd played a bit for the Cowboys in earlier years, but has recently been a practice squad guy
- *John Penisini (DT,
New Orleans): Penisini medically retired after 2022, then tried to come back in 2023 only to be waived due to a failed physical. There's enough talent/physicality there that he was signed by the Saints to their practice squad and an off-season reserve contract...but he might be the guy I'd be more shocked to see on an active roster than any player on these lists.
- *Terrell Burgess (S,
Buffalo Washington): Burgess was cut by the Commanders in 2023, signed to the practice squad...but then later activated and spent most of the season on the active roster. Then signed in presesaon by the Bills. He has potential to be picked up by someone but will be competing for a roster spot at best. Honestly, as a veteran he may be on the practice squad, but may also be a street free agent that gets signed as needed
- *Javelin Guidry (CB,
Detroit): Guidry spent some time bouncing around practice squads, then looked good in the 2022 preseason for the Jets before being injured and cut. This year he went through most of preseason unsigned before getting a late signing with the Lions, and then being cut two weeks later on cutdown day
Utah State
Signed to Practice Squad (1)
- *Jalen Davis (CB, Cincinnati
Cincinnati): The Benglas opted to keep 5 safeties and focused on versatility, meaning Davis lost a spot. It's a bit unexpected and no surprise he landed on the practice squad.
Not Yet Signed to Practice Squad (1)
- *Deven Thompkins (WR/RS,
Carolina): He was the #4 WR, and played about a quarter of the offensive snaps for the Bucs each of the past two years. He also served as the primary KR. Was waived by the Bucs after 2024 after some serious allegations from his wife; he then caught on with the Panthers before being waived/injured in August. He's been cleared, but between age, allegations, and injury, it's an uphill climb
Weber St + ^Southern Utah + #Utah Tech
Signed to Practice Squad (1)
- *Jonah Williams (DE, Minnesota
Minnesota): Was a surprise a few years back, making the Rams active roster and then actually ended up playing a fair amount. Now with the Vikings, they've signed players to start over him, but he's still an easy fit for the practice squad
Not Yet Signed to Practice Squad (1)
- Isaiah Wooden^ (WR,
LA Chargers Atlanta): Undersized and a UDFA, he was cut early by the Falcons, before signing with (and being cut by) the Chargers. Practice squad seems the hope, but may be a long shot
