KY and his NBA connections/experience/ ability to sell these recruits on getting them to the NBA
NIL money
Kalani is the closest thing BYU will get for football to LaVell Edwards. Nearly everyone in football is familiar with LaVell and what he did at BYU. He is a legend. LaVell was the amabassador, face of the program but he hired great assistants and let them do their thing. Kalani is doing the same thing. Kalani is the perfect face of the program and amabassador for BYU. He loves BYU, grew up a fan, understands the culture and has a vast amount of football experience and knowledge both as a player under LaVell and in coaching for years at the U, oregon State and at the Y.
Most understand this and Holmoe and the leadership certainly do. Who would you replace him with? Other than Andy Reid are you sure they would step in and produce immediate noticeable results? Or would it take two to three years implementing a new system and bringing in their own guys to run that system etc? All while in the now tougher Big 12. And then if that doesn't work, start over again? Also, BYU's coaching pool for head coach is very limited. Really need someone who knows BYU and its culture, so who would you pick?
IMO Kalani is perfect. Is their a learning curve now that BYU is in the Big12? Sure! But all signs are that BYU is embracing it and doing all they can to improve and meet the challenge.
Football is a totally different animal than basketball. What, over 100 players on the team vs 20? Is the NIL money the same?
