Utah thinks of themselves as an academic elite school. They are literally
‘middle of the road’ in academics among the Big 12 schools.
Iowa State, TCU, BYU, Baylor, Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State all rank above Utah. But Utah thinks they’re too good for the Big 12.

OTOH, maybe they think that by joining the ACC which is about to implode, would be a small steppingstone into the B1G?
