The #1 reason why USC and UCLA left is for the money. Period.
So what contributes to money?: By far the #1 contributor is football success, then to a much smaller degree basketball. Then it’s the fans and media eyeballs tied to those two sports programs.
You claim that the PAC10 has history, brand, and academics over the BIG12. And I say okay cool… how does any of that impact money?
History $0
Brand $0 (and is tied to region, how is the UW brand in the south?)
Academics $0
Here is what is tied to money:
1. Football success BIG12 > PAC10
2. Basketball success BIG12 > PAC10
3. Region (PAC10 is concentrated on west coast with late tv times, with populations that don’t care nearly as much about college as the south) BIG12 > PAC10
4. Fan bases and media eyeballs tied to football and basketball BIG12 > PAC10
So that is 4-0 for the BIG12 over the PAC10 when it comes to factors that generate revenue.
Which is why the initial valuations are higher for the BIg12 vs PAC10.
When it’s all said and done, follow the money. It’s the ONLY reason all of this is happening in the first place.
The PAC10 is dead, go woke go broke.
