Goethe's line from Faust was written in German and there are quite a few different translations of it. The one my dad used was always used appears to have com from Baynard Taylor's translation and interpretation, which reads: What from your father's heritage is lent, earn it anew, to really possess it. This is actually going to be the main talking point of my talk tomorrow.

There are other translations -
-That which thy fathers have bequeathed to thee. Go earn, in order that thou may'st it get.
-“What you inherit from your father must first be earned before it's yours.”
-What you have inherited from your fathers, earn over again for yourselves, or it will not be yours.
