They prey on vulnerable and uneducated individuals with few opportunities. They lure with the promise of riches and financial freedom, and encourage tactics that destroy relationships with friends and family.
The ones that sell snake oil are of the worst variety, indirectly and evasively promising health benefits to individuals who are suffering from real conditions. They and their members spread misinformation about modern medicine to fuel sales and registration and cause many people who would benefit from treatment to live with unnecessary pain.
It’s a travesty to me that pyramid schemes are legal in the United States under the guise of “direct sales.” It makes me sad to think of treasured relationships myself and my wife have lost or that have now become strained due to these schemes. I find it so interesting that many individuals running these companies are members of the church, and while I was living in Utah I often wondered how they reconciled what they were doing with their faith.
