You do realize that I'm an actuary and understand mortality rates and what "statistically credible" means?
In certain situations, insurance companies have to demonstrate statistical credibility when comparing the mortality experience on their own business versus what the overall population mortality is. So based on that experience, you still have a statistical credibility issue with the ship data.

Yes, the CI the professor gave is very broad in recognition of that, but there are several reasons why it's hard to make a good CI out of it (sampling methodology being a big one).
