There are substantive real reasons for BYU fans to love seeing Utah's dreams get
stomped into oblivion - Larry Scott probably said it best that Utah going to the playoff would create a transition for them from being the long time "up and coming" program to being a legit blueblood - if that transition were to occur it would have tangible long term effects on recruiting in the state (where BYU still regularly wins head to head with Utah for recruits) - and a snowball effect once critical mass is achieved.
So while there is plenty of raw Schadenfreude in all of this, there is also a celebratory survival instinct.

I cheered for them in '08. I had no problem with the utes. But since then they have become completely unbearable.
