... cause they would be too inconvenienced to take the complimentary check-in that pretty much every flight offers at the gate nowadays.

And the attendants just let it happen because it's less trouble than letting the boomer literally stand there 4 feet away from the attendant and block literally everyone until their boarding class is called.
