It was more than that. After 1 bad year they pretty much forced his hand to

fire his entire staff and restructure his contract. I think he was "fired" only because their ego was too large to let him walk out on them. They also know they can't let Gundy drag this out forever only to walk AFTER the early and signing periods as well as the Portal players.
