Not being able to throw it well doesn't make the fade a bad play, just not one
that should be called for him, perhaps. Like imdocrob and I were discussing, when thrown to the wide side of the field to a tall/athletic WR or a Pita level TE it works well (assuming the QB knows how to throw it). It is a bread and butter type play in the NFL and most college teams that have an athletic tall WR and a QB that can throw it.

For Jake, I wonder if his delivery angle and basic throwing mechanics, make that a harder throw for him to hit as you have to get it up high immediately and then it has to drop. That is hard to do when throwing with a more sidearm delivery. Based on what we have seen this year, I do agree that the fade route shouldn't be the go-to play. But this offense MUST find some consistency in delivering TDs in the redzone, or any playoff birth we get will be short-lived.
