I'm like most and hope this is just one of those experiences that teach the young man that he's not a kid anymore and there are lines you cannot cross just because you want to. 18 year olds aren't kids, but they are.
I had one son at 18 that thought it would be fun to do a little vandalism with his buds. They learned their lessons and have all subsequently led very productive and clean lives. Sad that the one kid didn't want his parents to know when he was brought in to be questioned on what had been done. When the police asked him, being taught to always tell the truth, without legal council consult, spilled his guts and ended up with 5 felonies. My son, I immediately got a lawyer involved, ended up with just 5 misdemeanors. Prosecutors, if they have at least one target, will often soften the penalty on others involved, because they got one fall guy.
If this guy was sitting in seating like he was, probably was smart enough to lawyer up. Always lawyer up. You always tell the truth in court, but people have no need to spill their guts to detectives.
