Sometimes also called an inducer motor? It basically sets up some negative pressure and the right air mixture for starting. Ours failed a couple of years ago and the behavior was similar. There was a pressure sensor in the housing and it wouldn’t start gas flow and attempt ignition unless this pressure sensor indicates the impeller motor was getting the air flowing for startup.

In our case, it wasn’t that it would work every time we turned it back on, but would only periodically work.

We found out that several blades on the impeller fan were broke and this wasn’t getting pressure and airflow right.
