I agree w you overall, BTW - I think it's mostly good. Those two castings kinda
grated on me though.
And I have a theory as to why.... the three ladies who teamed up to direct it are all kind of small women. Just riffing here, but I honestly think they might have gone off and cast a little woman bc they're little women and they didn't want to work with the 6'0 volleyball type that Tolkien describes.
