Fair question. My understanding is a school's liability only applies to official
school sanctioned sports. If your son was on a school sponsored team and got injured in practice or a game the school's insurance would pick-up the tab. For intramural type sports, the only real liability the school has is to provide a safe playing environment. If the field was in such a poor state that it showed the school was negligent and did not provide a safe playing environment, you could make a claim, but would likely have to go through the court system. Likely your insurance would sue the school and then the school's insurance and their legal team would work with your insurance and their legal team to come to a resolution. At least that has been my limited experience.
