If you just agree to $2m today, you run the risk of losing him to KSU

Offering him $3m tomorrow. You don't always get the chance to counteroffer (eg, Waterman). I think it's a very reasonable, no nonsense approach to just offer what you can offer and let things fall where they may. If BYU and the donors have decided $4m is what AJ is worth and what they can afford, it'd be foolish to play games and potentially lose out.
