Last year, the #11 team would have been the last at-large bid. That team was
10-2 Ole Miss. The other at-large bids would have been:

#6 Georgia (12-1)
#7 Ohio St. (11-1)
#8 Oregon (11-2)
#9 Missouri (10-2)
#10 Penn St. (10-2)
#11 Ole Miss (10-2)

Ten win teams that DIDN'T make the playoff:
#12 Oklahoma (10-2)
#15 Louisville (10-3)
#17 Iowa (10-3)
#24 SMU (11-2)

SMU's problem was they were in a G5 conference (and finished behind Liberty so they wouldn't have had an auto-bid). Louisville and Iowa both lost in their conference championship games and had 3 losses to end the season. Oklahoma was the lowest rated P5 team with 2 or fewer losses - and would be the only one to NOT get in. Which is why I say that 10-2 get you a chance - but you also have to hope that the SEC and Big Ten don't have enough 10-2 teams of their own to jump ahead of you (because they WILL finish ranked ahead of any 2-loss Big 12 or ACC team).
