1. Garmin InReach Mini 2. It was so nice to be able to send messages to my wife and allow her and our family to follow our routes each day. Also, have the SOS brought a lot of comfort in the "just in case" scenario. I felt like my Big 3 were all perfect (backpack, tent, and sleeping quilt). But honestly everything just worked out great. I wouldn't change a thing with my gear from this trip. If anything, i would have taken a 40 degree quilt vs the 20 degree I took. It was hot, but had the Heat Dome not been there then my 20 degree would have likely been perfect.
2. I don't think so. I had never done it, nor stepped foot in the Sierras. There are so many resources from blogs to YouTube. I felt pretty comfortable and the trail is very well marked (I just made a dumb mistake on Day 4...).
