By historically bad, I am not saying the conference was terrible. Big 10, historically, is nearly always one of the best 2 or 3 basketball conferences.

This year, they were off the mark.

UCLA beat Michigan State and Michigan in the finals. Michigan was a 1 seed. MSU had recently beaten 3 B1G teams ranked in Top 10.

None were as good as pollsters pegged them to be.
