This is exactly our approach too.
TV doesn't play a huge part in our entertainment. Sometimes mom needs a break and will plug in the kids. I get my sports, and my wife has one show going on at a given time.
A lot of this has to do with other things that prevent us from sitting down all that much too.
We pay for Netflix, MLB.tv ($10 deal I got before the AS break), and my wife has to use Prime for her business so we get the shows as a side benefit. And thank goodness for BYUtv being free and accessible everywhere.

Dish does have the best options for streaming on other devices (and away from home) of the traditional offerings.
