BackPacker Take a Hike
My prediction for the future of HS recruits, NIL, and P4 level teams
More and more P4 level teams are going to prioritize high school recruits a lot less. I mean, things are already trending that way, but I think that's going to continue in a big way such that only the top 10 high school players or so are going to be able to command a lot of NIL from P4 teams out of high school. Guys like AJ of course, Flagg, Cam Boozer, Daryn Peterson, Nate Ament, etc...

Beyond the top 10 high school players or so, the NIL offerings for high school players will probably dwindle down considerably and P4 teams will probably want those kids to prove themselves at the mid-major level first as freshmen. And that's probably a smart move for most top 100 high school players that are outside the top 10 as they're more likely to get a lot more playing time, be it as a starter, or as a rotational piece off the bench. In that way, they can get more in-game development experience and stack some stats on their college resume. And it is those who really rise to the top after a year or two in the mid-major levels that will then command a lot more NIL from big time programs as they go portaling.

In other words, most high school kids are going to have to accept, if they're not already, that they're more likely to have more successful college careers by pursuing less than stellar deals to play for mid-major teams for a year or two, as if joining the minor leagues of baseball, and play themselves into the big leagues with big NIL deals from there.

Or, in the case of guys like Kanon Catchings, Elijah Crawford, and Kozlowski as freshman on BYU's team this past season, be willing to acknowledge and accept that they're most likely going to be spending a majority of game time on the bench and be willing to be patient with themselves and their development at the P4 level and continue working hard in practices and building up a positive team culture with the expectation they'll be able to start getting starter level minutes as sophomores and juniors.
