runnincoug Intervention Needed
Two years ago BikeWalk Provo prototyped a way to make Timpview Drive safer
With roundabouts and bulb-outs to slow traffic, and protected bike lanes to protect kids biking to school. Unfortunately, the neighborhoods were angry and NIMBYism won, and despite the city being willing to make these changes, the neighborhoods shot the ideas down because it would make driving a bit more inconvenient and remove some on-street parking. At the time, we in BikeWalk Provo and the city were very disappointed because we knew a kid would eventually get hurt. Timpview Drive is just terribly designed and is not safe for kids biking to school. It's too long and straight, which encourages speeding, and the bike lanes are just paint, which doesn't actually protect a kid.

Well, two days ago, unfortunately, two kids were hit on a scooter on that road. Also, an acquaintance I know who lives there had her daughter hit on the road too a year ago. https://www.abc4.com/news/wasatch-front/two-17-year-old-pedestrians-struck-by-vehicle-in-provo-one-in-serious-condition/

Somehow we need to change our mindset from prioritizing driving to prioritizing safety for all users of a street—even if it makes our driving a little bit more inconvenient. Our streets should be safe for kids, and our convenience as drivers should be secondary considerations. This is their world too.

Double tragedy is that the ambulance carrying one of the kids to the hospital was then smashed by a truck that ignored the ambulance sirens and didn't yield, sending 4 EMTs and the young kid to the hospital in serious condition. https://www.fox13now.com/news/local-news/northern-utah/4-paramedics-2-others-injured-after-ambulance-hit-by-pickup-truck-in-provo
