When I was in an office 5 days a week, hours per day were sucked up in random pop-ins, convos by the elevator or bathroom, long lunches with colleagues that never ever went less than an hour, and inevitable meetings where someone was calling into a conference room speaker phone and couldn’t hear everyone (or anyone). Add the leaving early to beat traffic’s or random golf rounds mid-week that are prevalent in many cultures
Not to mention the commutes and sitting in traffic.
For better or worse there’s less chit chat, office gossip, drama, and fluff in meetings when WFH. Meetings are way more effective when WFH. You get started, hit the points and get off.
In the office there’s 10 minutes of chit chat before you do anything…and that’s after the parade of “someone’s in this conference room” and moving to the next one.
I’ve WFH since COVID and I get way more done.
I find it’s tougher on mental health to WFH. I’ll get to the end of a week and realize I had very little personal interaction with anyone outside of my family, but as far as getting stuff done…it’s easily more effective WFH.
