much like Amber Whiting stepped into. Whiting had very little talent to work with her initial season. Recruiting was all but finished when she was hired. And assuming everyone comes back Lee will be looking at the following incoming FR and current roster players:
1) Delaney Gibb. Great player. Unanimous Big12 FR of year.
2) Brinley Cannon. Solid FR season. Was better than most expected. Seems like a Big12 player.
3) Kambree Barber. Solid FR season. See Cannon above. Tenacious rebounder. Solid Big12 player. Injury latter part of season really hurt the team.
4) Marya Hudgins. Played only seven games before being sidelined with knee injury. Good rebounder. Will need to fully recover.
5) Hattie Ogden. Transfer last season. Played only 87 minutes all season. Doubt that she will be a big factor.
6) Heather Hamsen. Will be in her fourth season. Has yet to make much of an impact.
7) Arielle Mackey-Williams. Has missed the past two seasons with two ACL injuries. Solid player if healthy. Don't think you can count on much here. Really rooting for her.
8) Naia Tanuvasa. Walked on last year. Played 27 minutes. Who knows?
9) Mariam Traore. 6'3" forward. Will be FR next year. Sister of Fouss. Who knows? Little recruiting hype.
10) Braeden Gunlock. Incoming FR. From Montana. Reportedly recruited by Boise and several Big Sky/Ivy League schools.
11) Sydney Bennaly. Incoming FR PG. Reportedly wavering in her commitment. Excellent recruit. Hopefully Cummard retains her.
And that is it. Fortunately Cummard has one advantage here that Whiting didn't in the now changed portal. He will need to bring in some considerable talent or next year will be really rough.
I think Lee Cummard is an outstanding individual. He seemed like the obvious hire as the new WBB head coach. I was surprised that it took as long as it did for the announcement to happen. He is undoubtedly working around the clock right now to solidify his staff and look at who might be available in the portal that would be a BYU fit.
Lee has a lot to overcome to get the program competitive in the Big12. Fan support and NIL are both seemingly lacking. Hopefully the administration will give him the support he will need on all fronts. I have to think that this is an important sport to the AD's office and will be a focus of the new AD, whoever that turns out to be.
