If you wanted to be more adventurous, leave Amsterdam completely and go to Zaanse Schans, Volendam, or maybe Giethorn and you'll probably have a better experience and see what "Dutch" living is really like. Amsterdam is really for tourists and is way crowded and kind of a crazy place.
