What stats do point guards (or point forwards) on top teams typically put up?

Top 6 teams, per Kenpom:

  • Flagg (F, Duke) = 19 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 4.3 apg, 1.4 spg, 1.3 bpg, 2.1 TO, shooting 49/37/83
  • Clayton (G, Florida) = 18 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 4.2 apg, 1.3 spg, 0.5 bpg, 2.4 TO, shooting 44/39/86
  • Uzan (G, Houston) = 12 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 4.4 apg, 1.0 spg, 0.1 bpg, 1.4 TO, shooting 47/44/78
  • Broome (F, Auburn) = 18 ppg, 10.7 rpg, 3.0 apg, 0.8 spg, 2.2 bpg, 1.4 TO, shooting 51/27/59
  • Sears (G, Bama) = 19 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 5.1 apg, 0.9 spg, 0.1 bpg, 2.6 TO, shooting 41/35/85
  • Zeigler (G, Tenn) = 14 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 7.4 apg, 0.9 spg, 0.1 bpg, 1.1 TO, shooting 44/41/74

So, that's the standard for the top teams who have made the Elite 8, and are contending for a national championship. What AJ Dybansta and Kevin Young aspire to be. Here's a sample of some other top 20 Kenpom teams:

  • Holloman (G, MSU) = 9 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 3.8 apg, 0.9 spg, 0.3 bpg, 1.5 TO, shooting 39/34/83
  • Nembhard (G, Zags) = 11 pg, 3.0 rbg, 9.8 apg, 1.7 spg, 0.1 bpg, 2.5 TO, shooting 45/40/77
  • Hawkins (G, TTU) = 9 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 6.4 apg, 1.6 spg, 0.1 bpg, 2.0 TO, shooting 33/32/84
  • Lipsey (G, ISU) = 11 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 3.1 apg, 2.0 spg, 0.2 bpg, 1.6 TO, shooting 48/33/76
  • Bradley (G, Zona) = 12 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 3.7 apg, 1.8 spg, 0.1 bpg, 1.9 TO, shooting 47/32/83
  • Donaldson (G, Michigan) = 12 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 4.2 apg, 1.0 spg, 0.1 bpg, 2.1 TO, shooting 44/38/69
  • Smith (G, Purdue) = 16 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 8.5 apg, 2.2 spg, 0.2 bpg, 3.0 TO, shooting 43/39/83
  • Butler (G, Kentucky) = 11 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 4.3 apg, 1.6 spg, 0.2 bpg, 2.0 TO, shooting 49/36/74
  • Gillespie (G, Maryland) = 15 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 4.8 apg, 1.9 spg, 0.1 bpg, 1.9 TO, shooting 45/41/86
  • Pedulla (G, Ole Miss) = 15 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3.7 apg, 1.9 spg, 0.2 bpg, 2.0 TO, shooting 44/39/82
  • Fland (G, Arkansas) = 14 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 5.1 apg, 1.5 spg, 0.0 bpg, 1.4 TO, shooting 38/34/83

Finally, let's look at BYU, who finished 26th in Kenpom this past season:

  • Demin (F, BYU) = 11 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 5.5 apg, 1.2 spg, 0.4 bpg, 2.9 TO, shooting 41/27/70
  • Hall (G, BYU) = 7 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 4.2 apg, 0.7 spg, 0.1 bpg, 1.6 TO, shooting 40/35/67
  • Hall (starter season) = 9 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 5.1 apg, 1.0 spg, 0.0 bpg, 1.7 TO, shooting 42/36/63

Statistically Demin and Hall are at the lower end for a PG on a top 20 team. If Demin came back (though he should go to the NBA), it wouldn't be unreasonable to hope that he takes a leap in his 2nd year of college ball. Hall as a senior, who also served a mission, is probably not going to improve much at this point. Regardless, there's a clear gap between both and the PGs on the top 6 teams who are legitimate title contenders. In other words, we need an upgrade from the transfer portal.
