I don’t think they allow more or less physicality. I think they simply control
games through fouls called/free throws allotted, and the pace of the game through the same methods. If it were about allowing more or less physical play then I think we’d see more consistency in how games are called.

I think it’s fairly inconsistent, with weird games like Utah where they go to the line a million times. Was BYU any more or less physical against Utah? Or did the officials simply call what they called and keep control of the game?

I don’t know exactly what they choose to control games any particular way, but they certainly do.

Also, haven’t we collectively figured out that the officials aren’t exclusive to the Big 12, and many work games in other conferences? I suppose they could still switch to allow more or less physical play when they’re on duty for the Big 12, but my guess is it’s similar in other conferences. I think they do what they do to control and perhaps keep games close. I doubt they let the team’s level of physical play determine how they call the game, more likely the other way around.
