This story was relayed and supposedly confirmed by industry insider Trilly Donovan (that's a pseudonym, it seems to be some agent) last year.
In March 2024 Arkansas Head Coach, Eric Musselman, had a desire to get back out West to California to coach. Muss had also heard that Andy Enfield, USC's head coach, wanted to get back home to Dallas where he used to live.
Muss's sister is apparently married to one of the largest SMU donors. So Muss plotted a plan to put in his brother in law's ear that if the SMU job opened, he would be interested. This booster then went to great lengths to get then SMU head coach, Rob Lanier, fired. Once he was fired, Muss feigned interest in the job but pulled out of the running. SMU of course then hires Andy Enfield from USC, who really wanted the job.
With the USC job now open, Eric Musselman rallied hard for the job and got it, leaving Arkansas now open.
Arkansas then hired John Calipari away from Kentucky, a move that caused a lot of waves, as Calipari was reportedly done with the Kentucky fan base.
The Kentucky job then became open and became a bit of a circus as they struck out with a few candidates they wanted. They then hired alumnus, Mark Pope, from BYU, leaving the BYU job open.
BYU then hires Kevin Young and the rest is history.
BYU, Kentucky, & Arkansas now all find themselves in the sweet 16 and positioned well. Meanwhile Muss had a really bad season at USC.
What a crazy sequence of events and butterfly effect that eventually landed Kevin Young at BYU.
