This was a great win for Coach Young and the entire BYU program. They went toe to toe with Wisconsin and while the game got close at the end the result is BYU is playing next Thursday and Wisconsin is not.
I have to make a comment about the Flagrant 2 call on Baker. I absolutely disagree with the call. Baker was trapped with a double team and was simply trying to break the trap. Nothing was intentional and it was clearly incidental. What Baker should have done was call time out when he was trapped. For Mike Reed to make that call is egregious and I would hope it costs him moving on for more games in the tournament.
That being said this was a win for BYU and should send a clear signal that Kevin Young is building a program that will compete for the Big 12 championship and make deep runs in the tournament. It took him a while early in the season to fully adapt to the college game but I think he clearly understands it, both when to call time outs and when to substitute.
Saunders is the heart and soul of the team, and I am beginning to believe Young when he says he should get a chance to play in the NBA. If that happens, he should go because you cannot get those two missionary years back.
Kudos to John Tonje. He is complete player, and the type of player Young will be looking for at the two-guard next season. He certainly took advantage of the COVID year and a medical redshirt.
BYU won the game by out rebounding the Badgers 41-32 and shared the ball with 21 assists. They had 10 players score and only Hall failed to score but he had 6 assists. He also gives the Cougars a steady ball handler.
BYU hit 15-16 FTs and we can all remember when we thought their failures in this area would cost us a close game. The only miss was the backend of a 1-1 by Keita.
I would also say the Demin has raised his NBA stock in these last two games. As much as I would like him to come back for another year, and it would benefit him, if he is a lottery pick he will go and that alone will help Young in recruiting.
