They created different innies in order to run various trauma / painful experiments on her. Her innie goes to the dental room then she comes back out as an outie and asked if she feels any pain and she talks about some soreness. Then she goes to another room and so on and so forth. IRC they said she had like 7 or 8 rooms to go through the during Gemma's episode.

The eventual goal of severance is to free the outies of pain by creating a bunch of innies to deal with various painful experiences that a person may experience in life.
