Tikal was awesome, but we flew in from Guatemala City and overnighted.
You could certainly see a lot if it was just a day trip, but the overnighter lets you hike up the pyramids before dawn and see the sun come up over the jungle. Seriously awesome. And, you can stay in the jungle overnight and listen for monkeys.
