One got into one of those prestigious British universities (Oxford?) to get his masters in Russian having taken a total of ZERO courses in Russian, just doing it on his own. The other taught himself about 11 different languages to the point where he could go speak to a native speaker and have a pretty good conversation.

OTOH, I talk good English, so that's a plus for me!
