out of Honolulu. But instead of just rescheduling to today as suggested by Fulano I decided it was important to turn in my rental car and avoid 100 for an extra day.
Well at the airport the best Alaska could do with their hammered schedule was get me to LAX by 8pm.
So I picked up a Delta connection the next day to SLC/IDA ($543) and got a Hyatt LAX room ($201).
Well then the Alaska flight got delayed, delayed, then we got on the plane…but in the checklist the cabin was blister hot, decided they needed a part, so we had to deplane after sitting in a sauna environment for 45 mins. (They gave out a $12 meal voucher)
Then the crew timed out so they scrubbed the flight. So by now it’s 7:30pm and I sprint down and catch a Southwest flight to Maui ($130), I can’t get the Delta website to adjust my flight, so I run down and get the last ticket at the gate for Maui to SLC on a Delta redeye ($749).
Hyatt at LAX said my room is no refundable and Alaska guy from the Philippines said because they were on time for the next day no refund was due.
Drifted in and out of consciousness on the redeye watching Count of Monte Cristo in French, Lawrence of Arabia, and almost to the end of a movie called Conclave about a crazy Pope change.
Arriving in SLC 5 am slept on an air vent in terminal A till 8, took a sponge bath, they then changed my gate to the other side of the airport but I was able to get a California Kitchen sandwich with the voucher.
So I’ll get home a few hours before I would have anyway, bleary eyed, when for 100 bucks I’d have had another relaxing day in Hawaii.
Lesson learned just praying this 11 am boarding doesn’t go to smash like the rest of this odyssey.
